In the waning years of the 18th century, Napoleon Bonaparte victoriously occupied Rome, and his troops looted even the Sacristy of the Sistine Chapel, stripping it of its renowned collection of illuminated manuscripts. Thanks to the initiative of one of Spain’s most illustrious religious leaders, a portion of the Sistine Sacristy Collection was rescued before it was scattered any further.
